Mhlengi Mbutho

I was down at the beach and stoked to see the other guys surfing and told them I want to learn how to surf. I couldn’t even swim! In 2007 my now lifeguard senior taught me how to swim first and then introduced me to surfing.

I love surfing, it’s fun to always try new stuff and it keeps me motivated every day. I also want to share this fun with others so my people aren’t afraid of the ocean anymore but also have fun.

Yoh, surfing! It’s made me better. Growing up I saw youngsters get into trouble and surfing took me away from that. It makes me a better person! It’s how I express myself. Excited, happy, enjoyable. My mission as both a surfer and a lifeguard is to teach others to enjoy this thing! I also love taking pictures and videos of my fellow surfers. To see them on good waves makes so happy!

I try to focus during my heats; my main goal is to have fun but also to win. And if that doesn’t work I go back and train and try again. When I do surf, even when the conditions are bad, I get stoked!

Being new to the team I am very excited for what is to come and am proudly wearing the gear. I’m looking forward to try and surf a more nature friendly board by firewave for example.
